Canon L PVC Card Tray - 2 Cards

  1. Do not insert the tray until the printer tells you to. Follow the steps below.
  2. Open the generated PDF using Adobe Acrobat Reader. See Notes at the bottom of this page.
  3. Select File > Print.
  4. Make sure that any "Scaling" settings are set to 100%. Failure to do this will cause your ID cards to print too small, too large, or in the wrong location.
  5. Select Paper Size: "Disc tray L".
  6. Select Media Type: "Other Papers > Printable Disc (Recommended)".
  7. Place 2 cards in the PVC Card Tray (even if you are only printing on one).
    1. If you are printing more than 2 cards you can send all cards to the printer at once; the printer will print them in order, asking you to re-insert the tray after each print completes.
  8. On Canon L tray printers, you should not have the tray in the printer when you press print. Keep the door for the tray closed when you Print.
  9. The printer will make noise for a few moments. Eventually it will stop, the status light will blink, and the printer software on your computer should tell you to insert the tray.
  10. Now open the tray slot and insert the tray. As you insert it, make sure the thin clear strip of plastic at the tip of the tray slides under the rollers. That's what lets the printer grab the tray and pull it in.
  11. Press the second button on the printer (not the power button) to begin printing. As you start the print, keep light, steady pressure on the tray so the rollers can catch it. As soon as they grab it and start pulling it in, you can let go.
  12. If you print with a bleed, turn your tray upside down to drop the cards onto your desk, then wipe the tray with a paper towel or cloth to remove excess ink. This avoids getting ink smudges on your hands and cards.

Troubleshooting

Nothing happens. The tray isn't pulled in and the rollers don't move.

This is the most common issue, and it's almost always about how the tray is positioned when the rollers try to grab it. A couple of things help:

  • Give it a gentle nudge. Right as you start the print, push the tray forward slightly and keep a small amount of pressure on it until the rollers catch. Once they grab the tray, it will feed in on its own.
  • Practice the insertion with the cover open. Open the printer cover and insert the tray a few times to get a feel for it. You're aiming to seat the clear plastic tip under the rollers. (The printer won't print with the cover open, so this is just to build muscle memory for the right positioning.)

Notes

macOS

On macOS 10.14 and higher you may run into a problem printing from the Preview application. In that case, Adobe Acrobat Reader works.

Windows

On Windows 10 there is no way to adjust Scaling when printing from the default Windows PDF application. Instead, use Adobe Acrobat Reader or the built-in PDF reader in the Google Chrome browser.
