Using Image Placeholders

If you need to make numerous cards and each card will have a unique image on them, ID Maker can handle that for you!

Step 1: Configure Image Placeholders

This part is really simple, just insert an image in to your design, then enable the "This Object is a Placeholder" option and give the placeholder a name. Keep in mind that this image is just a placeholder - so once you set up the My Cards section in the next step, this image won't print - the new images you upload will print instead.

Step 2: Configure My Cards With Image Placeholders

After completing Step 1 move over to the "My Cards" page. In the video above we actually show the basics of manual setting up additional cards with different images. This works great if you only have a few cards to make.

But, if you need to make a large quantity of cards - you'll want to go ahead and flip the "Advanced Features" switch. When you enabled this you'll have some new options on this page:

  • Import Data: This allows you to import CSV or Excel documents. You can also drag/drop these files on to the My Cards page and it will automatically recognize it and import the data for you.
  • Export Data: This exports a CSV containing all of the data in the My Cards section, so you can edit it in your own spreadsheet application.
  • Upload Images: This lets you bulk upload images. You can select one image at a time, multiple images at a time, or even select a zip file that contains lots of images. You can also drag and drop images or zip files on the page and it will automatically import the images.
  • Unused images: This is only shown when there are images you've uploaded which are not currently being used on any cards.

The easiest way to get started is to create your first card manually using the "Add Card" button. Then after saving that, click on the Export Data button to save a CSV template file. You can then open the file that downloads (data.csv) in Excel or any other spreadsheet application. From there you can enter in all your variable data, including image names. When you're finished, save your data as a CSV file and use the Import Data button to bring the new data in to My Cards.

Next, you need to upload your images using the Upload Images button (or by dragging and dropping the images on to the My Cards page). You can select one image at a time, multiple images at once, or you can select a zip archive which contains all of your images. The image names will match based on the data in your CSV.

Naming/Referencing Images: To reference images in your CSV you should enter the name of the file without any file extension and keep in mind that case does not matter. For example if you enter "Kate" in to your CSV, this will will match an image named "KATE.jpg" or "KaTe.PNG".

Questions and Answers

How Do I Change Just One Card's Image?

Just click on "Edit" next to the card. Then click on the trash can icon to remove the current image (this doesn't delete the image, it just removes it from this specific card). Now you'll have the option to upload a new card, or a button named "Choose from Uploads" which lets you select any of the images you have uploaded.

Does It Matter When I Upload My Images?

Nope. You can upload your images before or after uploading your CSV data. ID Maker will recognize when you have a match and assign the photo automatically.
